My Fellow Scouts and Scouters,
A parent recently asked if Scouting has the same impact today it did when he was a youth. We did some investigation to see what National Capital Area Council has achieved since he was a Scout and found that over the past 40 years NCAC has delivered the Scouting program to over 2 million youth. Local Scouts have earned 1.8 million merit badges – enough to stretch from the White House to Fredericksburg, VA – and over 60,000 have earned the Eagle Scout Award, providing over 5.6 million hours of community service. Those are impressive statistics, but are they impact? Let’s
think about them in a different way.
- Research has shown Scouts are more likely to graduate from school and develop stronger relationships with their family and community because of their involvement. That is impact!
- In addition to building self-esteem, by earning merit badges Scouts learn to be involved citizens, improve their physical health, save money, and save lives. That is impact!
- Eagle Scouts place more value on education and the environment, are more committed to achieving personal and professional goals, and show greater respect for diversity. Now the opportunity to become an Eagle Scout is available for young women as well. That is impact!
